В Санкт-Петербурге вышла из печати книга Владимира Гельмана Из огня да в полымя. Российская политика после СССР  (БХВ-Петербург, 2013. – 256 с. ISBN 978-5-9775-0827-8).

"…даже простое сопоставление общественных ожиданий августа 1991 года с практикой их воплощения в жизнь (или, точнее, отсутствием этого воплощения) дает поводы не только констатировать, что «большие надежды» недавнего прошлого обернулись горькими разочарованиями в политическом настоящем нашей страны и глубокими сомнениями относительно ее будущего. Такое сопоставление ставит на повестку дня и многочисленные вопросы о логике российских политических процессов в постсоветский период: «как мы дошли до жизни такой?» Почему и как два с лишним десятилетия российской политики после СССР так и не приблизили нашу страну к политической свободе? Какие причины обусловили траекторию политического развития России после 1991 года? Какие механизмы вызвали «бегство от свободы» страны, всего лишь недавно избавившейся от коммунистического режима? И каковы шансы, что Россия все-таки сможет преодолеть нынешние политические тенденции и выйти на путь свободы и демократии, — или же этот путь закрыт для нее если не навсегда, то на долгие годы или даже десятилетия?"
