В издающейся в Вашингтоне газете Diplomat в статье «Пост-COVID: Китай выиграет в Центральной Азии» прогнозируют рост влияния Пекина в регионе, отмечая, что «никакая другая региональная или глобальная держава не может сравниться с возможностями» Поднебесной в плане инвестиций. Пандемия оказала большое влияние на Китай, но он закрепил лидирующие позиции как экономический гегемон в регионе и продолжит продвигать свою инициативу «Один пояс — один путь», считает автор […] Несмотря на недовольство населения китайскими проектами в регионе, у местных органов власти нет другой альтернативы, кроме как приветствовать китайские инвестиции, пишет Diplomat. […]

Антикитайские настроения в Центральной Азии могут быть связаны с несколькими важными факторами. По словам профессора Университета Джорджа Мейсона Эрика МакГлинчи, «зависимость центральноазиатских элит от китайских кредитов на развитие и их коррумпированное использование — лишь один из потенциальных факторов антикитайских настроений в регионе». Рост антикитайских настроений в регионе во многом вызван политикой Пекина в Синьцзяне, где свыше миллиона уйгуров, казахов, кыргызов и других тюркоязычных этносов отправлены в «лагеря перевоспитания». Власти стран Центральной Азии либо поддерживают действия Китая в Синьцзяне, либо сохраняют нейтралитет и пытаются подавить дискуссии о преследовании мусульман в Китае.
